When California booksellers launched California Bookstore Day last May, they got others thinking about how to replicate their success, if on a smaller scale. Now BookPeople in Austin, Tex., is celebrating National Bookstore Day—in BookPeople Nation, of course—on August 16.

In a mailing that went out yesterday, the store promises “bookish jubilation” along with free books, cake, and champagne. BookPeople will reveal its 100 favorite titles of all time, and is offering a special story time, literary trivia, magnetic poetry-a-thon, and two authors and a puppy.

The BookPeople event follows on the heels of a coordinated bookseller event in Chicago when, earlier this month nine bookstores held Chicago Bookstore Day.

As to why the big fuss? The store responds, “Why not? . . . Before we launch into the whirlwind of what’s to come, we want to throw up our hands and say thank you for building a nation of book lovers right here in Austin.”
