German readers were as wrapped up in Pottermania as readers in America and England in July, as the eighth installment in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts 1 and 2, took the top of the fiction chart in Germany at the end of July. The book is the first official Potter title Rowling has co-written, and also the first set for the stage. In nonfiction, Peter Wohlleben took the top two spots. The book in second place, The Hidden Life of Trees, will be released in North America next month by Greystone Books.
Andrea Camilleri’s The Other End of the Wire was knocked down a peg on Italy’s combined lists this month as Antonio Manzini’s 7/7/2007 settles into #1. Like Wire, which features Camilleri’s famed Inspector Salvo Montalbano, 7/7/2007 is a mystery novel starring a favorite recurring protagonist, the gruff detective Rocco Schiavone.
In the Netherlands, freelance journalist and crime writer Saskia Noort’s latest thriller, Skin Pain, which chronicles the struggles of Anne, an emotionally besieged television journalist, was #1 on the combined lists. Coming in at #2 is American Karin Slaughter’s The Kept Woman, the latest in her Will Trent series, which trails Georgia Bureau of Investigations detective Trent as he investigates the murder of an ex-cop. Jeff Kinney’s ever-popular Wimpy Kid series saw its tenth installment, Old School, at #3. —John Maher
